Ai Weiwei "Interlacing" in Paris
Written by Bob Bishop

The multi -talented and controversial Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is featured at the Jeu de Paume with an exhibition of his photos and videos. As an architect, conceptual artist, sculptor, photographer, blogger, Twitterer, interview artist and political activist, Weiwei, in the spirit of Duchamp, is an artist who brings life into art and art into life. "Interlacing" is the first important exhibition in France devoted to this iconoclastic and provocative artist, now a major figure of the independent Chinese art scene.

Weiwei's work in its many forms confronts contemporary social issues. The exhibition includes photos ranging from black and white analogue pictures documenting his years in New York (1983-93) to photographs of Biejing (1993-2002) to pictures he posted for his now-banned blog. His "Provisional Landscapes" (2002-2008) series depicts demolition sites around China while commenting on the price of progress. The  "Study of Perspective" series literally "gives the finger" to traditional values.

The exhibition focuses on WeiWei's diversity, complexity and his ability to create links,.. the "interlacing" and "networking"  typical of his work. In an interview with curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, Weiwei observes: If artists betray the social conscience and the basic principles of being human, where does art stand then?" Imprisoned by the Chinese authorities on April 3, 2011 and released on bail in June 22, he is at the time of this Paris exhibition still forbidden to leave China.
