Wine shops (caves à vins) in Paris have a more important role than in many other European countries. The wine specialists behind the counter see their role as counsellor, much like a pharmacist, ready to offer advice to the novice and connoisseur alike. Often, these shops take the next step, and offer clients a place to sit and drink a glass, providing a cosy atmosphere and a bite to eat. Enter the hybrid shop-bar.
Set away from the throbbing area of Parmentier, the Cave du Daron is the perfect place to go for a drink with a friend, especially so if either of you have an interest in oenology (the study of wine) as the owner Jean-Julien enjoys praising the qualities of his bottles; recommending the ideal glass to accompany your plate. Located opposite Le Chateaubriand, the 9th best restaurant in the world, listed on http://www.theworlds50best.com, the Cave is also a great place to enjoy a starter and aperitif before moving across the road to higher echelons.
An important feature of any bar is the presence of a loyal following. Whilst you do not want to be glared at as an outsider upon entering, a solid group of fans speaks wonders for the venue. Le Cave du Daron has a Ladies Only tasting evening on Wednesdays, which sees the same group of girlfriends meet every week to learn about new bottles on the menu and to catch up in small groups. Bottles to “take-away” are of course less expensive than if you choose to drink at the bar. But, on the plus side, you are welcome to open your bottle at the bar, have a glass, and then take it home afterwards. A bottle of Sevre et Maine, for example, is roughly 10 euros take-away and 17 drunk at the bar. With a large and good quality cheese plate coming in at 8 euros, Le Cave Du Daron is not an expensive night. All in all, the Cave du Daron is a little-known and charming wine bar, just away from the madding crowd where you can enjoy good quality wine, and sample some delicious cold meats and cheeses. Highly recommended. Where 140 Avenue Parmentier
