The Franco-Finish duo The Dø with their debut Album "A Mouthful" is a fresh face on the French rock scene. They will be performing at the Olympia in Paris November 28, 8pm. The Dø's song "The bridge is broken" has gotten good play on French radio stations. The band is fast becoming a favorite among Parisian indy fans.
Although the band bills itself as Folk Rock at the heart of The Dø's popularity is a captivating originality of sound and lyrics (in English) that transcends easy classification. The Dø consists of Finish singer Olivia B. Merilahti and French musician Dan Levy (their name taking the first letters of both of their names and using the Finish ø). Levy's classically trained, jazz-oriented style finds a perfect yet improbable match with Merlahti's powerful and unique voice. Their influences traverse all genres and the effect is a fusion of anything and everything with the group making up the rules as they go along.
The diversity of their backgrounds, both nationally and musically, may help explain the widely varied and almost indescribable nature of their sound. While the first single, "At Last" is a slow heart-felt pop ballad other tracks dabble in full-on rock ("On My Shoulders"), rap ("Queen Dot Kong"), and folk ("Travel Light").
Added to this is an energetic, charismatic and sincere live performance style. It is clear that the duo does not simply create music but live it.
‘Dø' is also the first and last note sung in the major scale, but as the group explains music is not as mathematical as its basic elements and not every combination will generate a desirable melody. The Dø is the right mix of some pretty explosive elements and what results is nothing less than mind-blowing.
