Fetes, place de la Republique, 1950 © IZIS Bidermanas Israëlis Bidermanas (1911-1980), who worked under the name of Izis is featured with a retrospective of his photographs "Izis Paris Des Reves" (to May 29, 2010) at the Mairie de Paris. The exhibition begins with portraits of French Resistance fighters (maquisards) and is followed by pictures representing major accomplishments in his photographic career such as his poetic pictures of French circuses, photos he took while working for the magazine Paris Match and of course his well-known signnature Parisian street life photos. The exhibition's name is inspired by the photographer's first book "Paris Des Reves" published in 1950.
Izis was a part of the 1950s humanist photographic genre focusing on poetic moments of daily life. His work was included in the 1951 MoMA exhibition "Five French Photographers," organized by Edward Steichen that included Brassai, Henri Cartier Bresson, Robert Doisneau and Willy Roni.
