Festival franco-brittanique Paris 2000
The British community in Paris celebrates Franco-British cooperation
and friendship with a series of cultural events in June, including
three plays in English. The Tower Theatre from London performs
As You Like It in the Bois de Boulognes Jardin Shakespeare
(June 6-11), local troupe Dear Conjunction presents Summer Lightning,
an adaptation of a 1929 P.G. Wodehouse novel, at the Théâtre du
Renard (June 20-25), and students from the Collège Pierre de Ronsard
in the 17th arrondissement and St. Andrews School in Croydon
forge cross-cultural ties through theater in the original play
Running Free at the Mairie du XVIIe (June 15-16). Festival info

A Cocteau Cocktail
Two short plays and one song by Jean Cocteau, Le bel indifférent,
Le fantôme de Marseille and La dame de Monte-Carlo provide
the basis for Glasshouse theaters original production Take the
Fire, translated and adapted by Helen Lea and Andrew Wale. Neglected
by her lover, a woman (Karen Gluck) fantasizes about getting even
or free, taking her cue from famous females of the stage and screen,
in this monologue that premiered at London's Lyric Hammersmith

Carmen Update
Street theater troupe Compagnie Off gives Bizets most famous
opera an urban sensibility with Carmen-Opéra de rue, presented
in a metal arena set up at the Parc de la Villettes Espace chapiteaux.
The audience is encouraged to move around this adult-sized jungle
gym for 360º views of the action.
