As the race for the presidency begins to heat up, nearing the finish line, keep abreast of each party’s platform, participate in political chats and even register to vote on-line by logging on any of these sites.
www.election.com
The primary purpose of this trilingual privately-owned website is to make it easy for Americans to participate in all kinds of elections. Log on to check out upcoming campaigns in your home state, register to vote or request an absentee ballot.
www.grassroots.com
Founded in 1999 and based in California, Grassroots.com is a private, nonpartisan company providing Internet-based communication tools and services with a view to generating political awareness: empowering individuals and organizations to effect positive, democratic change. On this site you can see where the various candidates stand on abortion, foreign policy, crime, education, race and ethnicity... And find out what’s really, really being done about these and many, many more pertinent issues.
www.politics.com
Know the candidates. Follow the money. Read the polls. Join in forums. Comprised of a team of motivated political advisors, professionals and executives, politics.com provides election news, as well as state-by-state data and information regarding various federal legislators.
www.democrats.org
www.gop.org
In each case, these straightforward, serious sites are hosted by the National Committees of the political party concerned. No surprises here. Each points out its camp’s achievements and the other side’s short-comings. Complete with transcripts, images and videos... There is Campaign 2000 tracking, as well as election news and info on how each candidate is doing in the polls. Both have a forum where you can let off steam on a variety of topics.
www.democrats.com
Not be confused with democrats.org, this lighter – somewhat funnier – eye-opener claims to be the first major on-line community for America’s 100 million Democrats. There are numerous pages including those dedicated to the Womens Voting Guide, the Democratic Platform, information on local parties and even Banana Republicans. A stinging column lists the names and pictures of the Republicans who spearheaded Clinton’s impeachment, along with all the dirt about their own moral conduct, (or, lack of) ethical uprightness. If you leave them your email address, you’ll be sent regular newsletters filled with the latest information on candidates and issues.
www.gop.com
Here again, this is a separate site from gop.org that’s a bit lighter but still choked with info on the elections and legislation. You can enter forums to familiarize yourself with Republican officials, and read about what the Democrats are doing wrong. The message of the day serves as food for thought, while a close-up of a candidate “in the spotlight” is regularly featured. And, there’s commentary on all kinds of campaign issues, along with political cartoons by illustrators such as Kevin Tuma, Paul Nowak and Berry Shelton.
