Pina Bausch is indisputably the most popular choreographer on the block this month. Her company presents the grande finale event at the Théâtre de la Ville, and a separate show later in the month across-the-square at the rival Châtelet-Théâtre Musical de Paris.
Bauschs choreographies are a tantalizing mix of rebellious women in sexy dresses, ambiguous men, sitcom audience gags, video projections and socio-cultural allusions with helter-skelter soundtracks.
Following works about Sicily, Hong Kong and Portugal, Bauschs new piece Wiesenland Zöld Föld (Terre verte), running June 7-14 at the Théâtre de la Ville, relates her perception of Hungary, a country still in the throes of post-communism. From June 18-23, the second program, Danzon, features Bausch herself dancing a sensually fluid 5-minute solo in semi-darkness.
