“Mnemonic”
Complicite’s latest production has a cinematic feel as stories cut, cross-fade, jump forward and flashback. Nevertheless, this memory play is well served by the freedom and spontaneity the stage provides; like a memory every time it is recalled, each night is a new creative act as stories collide and collapse into each other. The play “is an act of memory constructed in dozens of minute fragments,” says its director Simon McBurney “because that is what actually happens when you remember: you have to put fragments back together, you have to reconstruct a pattern.”
To Mar 4, Tue-Sat 8:30pm, Sun 3:30pm, MC93 Bobigny, 1 bd Lénine, Bobigny, Mº Bobigny-Pablo Picasso, tel: 01 41 60 72 72, 50-140F

“Une Bête sur la lune”
Like so many immigrants to America in the early decades of the last century, the Tomasians hope to make their way in a prosperous new land. But Aram and Seta are refugees of the Armenian genocide of 1915, and Seta is sterile. So, unable to found their own family, the memories of lost parents and siblings haunt their lives. That is until Vincent, a street urchin with an equal need to love and be loved, causes the young couple to reaffirm their commitment to each other. Irina Brook’s masterful direction of Richard Kalinowski’s quietly stunning play captures, with simplicity and grace, the gestures and aspirations of wounded souls as they learn to live again. Simon Abkarian and Corinne Jaber form a perfectly tuned duo in this bittersweet, timeless tale in which love conquers all. Tue-Sat, 9pm, Sun 3:30pm, Théâtre de l’Œuvre, 55 rue Clichy, 9e, M&Mac251; Place de Clichy, 70-240F, tel: 01 44 53 88 88

Festival de l’Imaginaire

An authentic revelation of diverse cultures and beliefs in the heart of Paris, this fest lasts one all too brief month.

Dance
by Carol Pratl

“Scratching the Inner Fields” (chor. Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez) Mar 1-3 at 8:30pm. As you can guess, the Théâtre de la Ville has a predilection for Flemish dancemakers and Vandekeybus is definitely one who has an annual lifetime ticket to ride. His new production, bearing an enigmatic title as do all his works, blends music, theater, text and intense acrobatic movement that is his trademark. Théâtre de la Ville/Abbesses, 31 rue des Abbesses, 18e, M° Abbesses, tel: 01 42 74 22 77

4 + 1 (little song)” (chor. Catherine Diverrès) Mar 1-3 at 9pm. Contemporary choreographer Catherine Diverrès presents her new piece “4 + 1 (little song)” which deals with the dark side of childhood. Peering beneath smiling innocent faces, she examines the cruelty that many unsuspecting youngsters are capable of inflicting on one another.
Théâtre de la Bastille, 76 rue de la Roquette, 11e, M° Bastille, tel: 01 43 57 42 14

“Spectacle de Ballets” (chor. Jerome Robbins), Mar 4 at 3pm, Mar 8 at 7:30pm. Nearly every year the Opera Ballet includes a program of works by the great American dancer-choreographer Jerome Robbins, of “West Side Story” fame, who passed away in 1998. Robbins choreographed numerous musical comedies, including “Gypsy,” “Funny Girl” and “Fiddler on the Roof,” as well as superb moderno-ballet combos with plenty of Broadway pizzazz during his stint as co-director of the New York City Ballet from 1983-1990, after his mentor George Balanchine’s death. This Opera program features four works spanning three-decades in the aftermath of WWII: “In the Night” (1970, music by Chopin), “The Cage” (1951, music by Stravinsky), “Other Dances” (1976, music by Chopin) and “The Concert” (1956, music by Chopin). A must for those who like modern movement marvelously set to classical music.
Opéra National de Paris-Palais Garnier, Paris Opera Ballet Company, pl de l'Opéra, 1er, M° Opéra, tel: 08 36 69 78 68

“L’Histoire de Manon” (chor. Kenneth MacMillan, mus. Jules Massenet) Mar 5, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 15, 17, 27 at 7:30pm; Mar 10 & 24 at 2:30pm and 8pm; Mar 18 at 3pm. There’s probably no one who’s portrayed the tragic heroine Manon Lescaut in Kenneth MacMillan’s production “L’Histoire de Manon” more exquisitely than Sylvie Guillem in recent years. But if you can, try to see recently-named étoile Aurélie Dupont, whose theatricality makes her a perfect lead role in this now classic ballet inspired by the 19th century work of French author Abbé Prévost.
Opéra National de Paris-Palais Garnier, Paris Opera Ballet Company, pl de l'Opéra, 1er, Mº Opéra, tel: 08 36 69 78 68

“Signé, signés” (chor. Mathilde Monnier) Mar 20-24 at 8:30pm. Mathilde Monnier’s new two-part contemporary dance work dedicated to her mentor postmodern choreographer Merce Cunningham tests his method of randomly associating movement, images and sound to create a one-of-a-kind visual poem. In the first half, the dancers are scattered horizontally onstage developing their kaleidoscopic movement amid reflections of broken mirrors. The second half, features two men dancers, two women dancers and a videomaker, who explore various aspects of sexuality, desire and fantasy...
Théâtre de la Ville, 2 pl du Châtelet, 4e, M° Châtelet, RER Châtelet-Les Halles, tel: 01 42 74 22 77

“Spectacle de Ballet” (chor. Jiri Kylian) Mar 23, 26, 28, 29, 31 at 7:30pm; Mar 25 at 3pm. Jiri Kylian, head of the Nederlands Dans Theater since 1978 and recent recipient of three coveted Nijinsky Awards at the Monaco Dances Forum held last December, has been a regular guest choreographer at the Paris Opera. His rejuvenated classico-modern style with its vitality and humor, has made this Prague-born choreographer one of the world’s most popular, both with hard-core ballet lovers and contemporary fans. His successful solution has been to divide the ensemble into three distinct troupes, according to age and therefore ability: NDT 1, the main company of professionals in their peak years; NDT 2, the junior branch featuring youthful apprentices; and NDT 3, the 40+ veteran dancers, most of whom have been with Kylian from the start, and now perform more mature experimental works. This program designed for the Opera Ballet Company highlights last year’s “Doux mensonges,” his 1991 work “Stepping Stones” — and a new, as yet untitled creation — the latter two’s music being performed by William Christie’s Les Arts Florissants. A seasonal must.
Opéra National de Paris-Palais Garnier, Paris Opera Ballet Company, pl de l'Opéra, 1er, M° Opéra, tel: 08 36 69 78 68

“Rain” (chor. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker/Rosasl) Mar 27-31 at 8:30pm. Belgian choreographer De Keersmaeker is back for her annual Théâtre de la Ville run with a new work that will certainly have nothing to do with the weather in spite of the title. Don’t expect any aquatic effects other than her dancers’ perspiration who are kept on the move constantly occupying every inch of space in carefully calculated architectural patterns that juxtapose tension and release.
Théâtre de la Ville, 2 pl du Châtelet, 4e, M° Châtelet, RER Châtelet-Les Halles, tel: 01 42 74 22 77
