Summer Festivals

Fête de la Musique France’s national music festival, organized by the Minister of Culture, Jean-Jacques Aillagon, is now in its 22nd year. The idea is to bring together the general public and celebrate music in a fashion not usually tolerated by local gendarmes or grumpy neighbors. In Paris, that means hundreds of thousands of people gathered on street corners, in squares, bars, shops, restaurants, or anywhere else a guitar can be strummed in front of an applauding audience. Highlights include... Gotan Project at Le Palais Royal (1er, 8pm, free). The Air Guitar Championships at the Nouveau Casino (11th, 9pm, free). Grand Central Records party, in front of the Batofar (13th, 4pm, free). Live techno by the Porte d’Italie’s Gaumont cinema (13th, 7pm, free). Paris’ symphonic orchestra playing Wagner in the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière (13th, 8pm, free). Stupeflip and Zenzila on the Place Denfert-Rochereau (14th, 8pm, free). Les Opéras En Plein Air Now in its third year, this “open-air opera” season starts in Paris’ Luxembourg gardens. Last year, close to 45 000 spectators witnessed the triumph of “Don Giovanni” — in Paris as well as in some of the region’s most beautiful châteaux. This summer sees the “Noces de Figaro,” Mozart’s chef d’œuvre set in 18th century Seville, with a stageplay by Alain Sachs and musical direction from Jérôme Pillement. 25-28 June, 9pm, Jardin du Luxembourg, 6e, RER B Luxembourg, info: 08 92 70 18 04 or www.operaenpleinair.com, 54-64E

Solidays As well as making its 80 000 visitors aware of the best new bands and the latest musical trends, Solidays is a festival promoting AIDS awareness. Welcoming close to 40 acts and musicians, concerts are held over two days in the middle of a horseracing track in the west of Paris. This year’s program is dominated by French rock performers: Aston Villa, Nada Surf, Mickey 3D, Les Wampas, Les Wriggles, Dionysos and Jean Louis Aubert. Even Saturday’s “Nuit Electro” features French dance DJs Bob Sinclair, Martin Solveig plus a live set from Fred Galliano’s African Divas. The Roots and Death In Vegas will appeal to the younger, international crowd, while Kool & The Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire will cater to the funkier fans of the classic old-school flavors. Rock En Seine There’s little to be said about this one-day outdoor festival, except that it boasts a staggeringly impressive lineup of pretty well-known acts. Headlining the event is Massive Attack, recently reduced to a one-man band, namely 3D, on recent LP “100th Window.” Beck, PJ Harvey, Morcheeba, Eagle Eye Cherry, K’s Choice and Tom McRae complete the bill.
