ART

"Sous la grisaille de Mexico." A series of recent works by six young Mexican artists highlights paintings by Victor Rodriguez and photo collages by Ambra Polidori during the month of May. Although the images are monochromatic, the subjects these artists deal with aren't always black and white. To July 31, Espace d'Art: Yvonamor Palix, 13, rue Keller, 11e, METRO: Ledru-Rollin, tel: 01.47.00.01.21.

"Le son." Forget karaoke! This interactive exhibit lets visitors experiment with sounds by speaking, singing or strumming on virtual instruments. Most sections are translated into English. Cité des sciences & de l'industrie, Parc de la Villette, 30, av Corentin Carious, 19e, METRO: Porte de la Villette, tel: 01.40.05.80.00 (info) or 01.40.05.12.12 (reservations), tickets 50F/35F, closed Mon and May 1.

PHOTOGRAPHY

"Rondes de Nuit," Julie Ansiau. This young photographer took a job as a server in a strip club in order to get closer to her subjects. The result is a series of intimate photographs of nightclub dancers from the Pigalle area. Far from "nudie pictures," these images let the viewer discover the dancers decontractés shoes strewn on the floor of their dressing room, performance dates circled on their calendars and a commute to work down a street as neon-lit as Las Vegas or Broadway. Winner of the Picto, Kodak Professionnel and Photograpie. Com's "Cinquième Lauréate de la Bourse du Talent," Ansiau's photos can be seen on the Internet @Photographie.com.

Kurt Bloom. The most important contemporary artists of the 1950s posed for this Swiss photographer. His portraits include: Braque, Rothko, Chagall and Giacometti as well as a very coquin Picasso chilling out in a rocking chair surrounded by a few of his cubist paintings. To June 5, Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, 36, rue Falguière, 15e, METRO: Falguière/Pasteur/Montparnasse, tel: 01.43.21.44.83, closed Sun-Wed.

"Sans Issue," Donovan Wylie. This Irish photographer documented life within a poor subculture of Western England between 1993 and 1997. His black and white photographs tell the story of a young community who, let down by modern culture, created a refuge on the outskirts of society. To June 5, Galerie Fair & Cause, 58, rue Quincampoix, 4e, METRO: Rambuteau, tel: 01.42.74.26.36, closed Sun & Mon.

"Les nouvelles tribus aux Etats-Unis, entre sectes et communautés: photographies de Yan Morvan." There's a bumper sticker a lot of "Deadheads" used to have on their VW vans that read: "Who are the Dead and why are they following me?" Today, many of these hippies may be asking themselves the same question about Yan Morvan, a photographer who followed tens of thousands of modern-day nomads along the trails of their existence. His photographs visit cult events as rebellious as the Burning Man Festival held in a Nevada desert every year to the peace-and-love filled Rainbow Gatherings along the West Coast of the United States. To June 5, FNAC St-Lazare, 109, rue St-Lazare, 9e, METRO: Notre-Dame de Lorette, tel: 01.55.31.20.00.

FILM

"Say Kom Sa" and "Une Maison à Prague." These two 1998 films are part of the Centre George Pompidou's "classics" documentary series projected one Monday per month at the Bibliothèque publique d'information. The first looks at the serendipity of Vietnam and the Vietnamese and tries to understand why "c'est comme ça." The second film tells the story of a house in Prague where the narrator was born and of all the history this house has seen. May 31, 6pm, Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles, 46, rue Quincampooix, 4e, METRO: Rambuteau, tel: 01.44.78.45.71, free admission.
