Musique en Seine

Free open-air festival at the quai de l'Arsenal. All the best of French rock, chanson, Latino, rai and techno. Méla-Musique

An extraordinary array of World Music, offered by the Maison des Cultures du Monde, including Flamenco star Jamie Heredia "El Parron;" Los Mariachi dos Mundos, from Mexico; Steel Drum Melodies from the Caribbean; and heiress to a Malian griot legacy, Diaba Koïta. Paris Jazz Festival

Now in its sixth year, this laid-back festival offers world-class jazz for free every Saturday afternoon. Seating in the closed pavilion has been doubled, but many people are content just to sprawl on the grass and listen. Guests this year include Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones, Dianne Reeves, Roy Hargrove and Ahmad Jamal. La Défense Jazz Festival

This popular annual event features lunchtime and evening concerts with special performances also given by finalists for an important national jazz prize from 2-7pm on the weekend. Artists this year include Fred Wesley and two Blue Note recording artists, Erik Truffaz and Stefano Di Battista. Fête de La Musique

Held on June 21 to celebrate the summer solstice, this world-famous festival of music is stronger than ever.

Lou-Pascalou. This popular café organizes a huge party in the square facing it, with good music and good cheer, 14, rue des Panoyaux, 20e, Metro Ménilmontant, tel: 01.46.36.78.10. Place de Bourg Tibourg. Pretty little square with lots of cafés and restaurants hosts high quality Paris-based bands. Place de Bourg Tibourg, 4e, Metro Hôtel de Ville. Place de la République, Metro République. This is the place to see rock on solstice night. It's big and crowded but all the best of rock  both French and international  feature here. Place Denfert Rochereau, Metro Denfert Rochereau. This is where the young French talent like Dionysos and Candie Prune will be playing. The emphasis is on techno and the crowd is young.

 

La Villette Jazz Festival

Moved forward a week this year, the La Villette Jazz Festival is the biggest of its kind in Paris. Highlights include several salutes to Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, Steve Coleman, Sam Rivers, Abbey Lincoln and John McLaughlin. June 24 to July 4, from 8pm, La Villette Jazz Festival, 211, av Jean-Jaurès, 19e, Metro Porte de Pantin, tel: 08.03.07.50.75, 140-175F for all-evening pass.

 

 Festival de Jazz Django Reinhardt

The 20th anniversary of one of the most relaxing and unusual musical festivals in France. The site is on an beautiful little island five kilometers from Fontainbleau that is an important pilgrimage stop for the Gypsy community. The festival affords a unique chance to make contact with communities from France, Great Britain, Spain and Italy. Artists this year include Manuel Rocheman, Oscar Valdes, Latcho Drom, Larry Corryel, Randy Brecker and the Kussi Weiss Trio.
